People First NL Advisors
The People First movement uses Advisors (people without intellectual disabilities) to help them do the work of the organization. Advisors are appointed by the Executive and help members in all the elected positions.
Advisors help the President to do their reports and also go to meetings with the President to help them. Advisors help the Vice President in their role. Advisors help the Treasurer to understand the finances and to make reports or recommendations.
The goal is for Board members to be able to make decisions by themselves. The advisor is encouraged to share their opinions and knowledge to help the Board members to understand the results of decisions.
Advisors are volunteers. Advisors are not support workers. Advisors are always present at People First meetings to help members if they need it. People First local, provincial and territorial chapters, and the National Office, all use advisors to help members to be effective in their roles.
If you are interested in volunteering as a People First advisor – please contact us!
Here are some of the expectations of advisors – in the words of People First members.
