About Us

Hello from People First of Newfoundland and Labrador!

What is People First?

People First of Newfoundland and Labrador is an organization started by individuals who have been labelled with an intellectual disability. They wanted to have a voice in their community and they wanted everybody to know that labels hurt people. They wanted to be known as people first, and started a group by that name.

What does People First do?

We educate the public about issues that people with disabilities are facing, and how they can help make community a better place. People First helps individuals with intellectual disabilities to learn to speak out for their rights, and to make their own decisions and choices in life.

We have been involved in many projects locally, provincially, and nationally and continue to bring the voice of people with intellectual disabilities to the forefront.

What is People First doing now?

People First of Newfoundland and Labrador is currently looking for new (and old!) members to get in contact with us and get involved in some of our activities. Recently we hosted a screening of The Freedom Tour in St. John’s, and we came together for an annual general meeting in the fall of 2009. We invite you to check our News & Events page for the latest news and events.

We are also looking for your stories. Do you have a story about living in the community? Or about going to school, or being a volunteer? If so, we would love to hear from you. Please feel free to contact us.
